Respite Care

Whilst a care home is often a permanent residence for those staying there, that’s not always the case. There are other options that we provide at Kingswood Court that might suit you or your loved ones slightly better - respite care is one of these options.

What is respite care?

Respite care is, most often, a short stay in a care home. People in respite care receive the same standard of care and support that they would as if they were full-time residents. Temporary residents receiving respite services usually stay with us for up to four weeks, but this is dependent on the individual and their circumstances.

But why might someone only need a short stay in a care home? Well, there are a few scenarios where respite care could benefit you. For example, if you or a loved one has recently come out of hospital but isn’t quite ready to move back to living independently, respite care will give them enough time to further recover.

Alternatively, if you care for a relative or friend and you, for whatever reason, can’t commit to your usual care schedule for a short time, then a short stay in a care home would solve this. These are just a couple of examples of how respite care can benefit both people in need of support, as well as carers themselves.

How will respite care affect carers and their allowances?

Being a carer, like many jobs, is reliant on your ability to support others. And, to effectively support others, you need to be in good physical and emotional health - this is exactly why it’s important that carers understand their right to take breaks. In turn, it’s equally important that the people they care for are still able to be supported when their carers are taking valuable time to themselves.

Naturally, taking a break often makes us consider the financial implications - but what exactly are they? Well, in truth, it’s a difficult one to answer as it depends entirely on individual circumstances. However, advice from the Carer’s Allowance Unit suggests you can still receive your Carer’s Allowance Unit for up to four weeks in any six-month period if you have a break from caring.
